XP Service Pack 3 causes my Office to stop working well

I have Office XP 2002 Service Pack 3. My automatic updates for
Windows XP has recently tried to install Windows XP SP 3. But after
it installs (and I reboot of course), then my Office applications
don't work very well. This applies to both Word and Excel, where they
take a long time to start. When I try to start one of them, it takes
about a minute instead of a few seconds like it used to. I have tried
installing the SP3 three separate times, each time rolling it back
when it caused the problem. I know it wasn't a fluke since it did the
same thing all three times. So now I have turned off my automatic
updates, since the slow starting Office applications is not
acceptable.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance,
John

Do NOT use System Restore to do a roll-back! If you want to remove WinXP
SP3, use Add/Remove Programs.

You might try running Disk Cleanup and then an Office Repair.

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=1173 | select "Windows
XP" then select "Windows XP Service Pack 3"

I have started a request with MS using the link you mentioned. Why is
it bad to roll back SP3 with System Restore?
thanks

System Restore is neither a "roll back" utility nor a system state saver.
It covers only a limited area of Folders, and within them, only a very
limited set of files. See http://bertk.mvps.org/html/filesfolders.html

An update on my situation: MS has tried to fix it but hasn't been able
to. They had me create another login user profile, and when I logged
in with the new user, I no longer had the problem. So their solution
is: the old profile is corrupted and I should just use the new one.
But I don't want to spend the hours it would take getting a new
profile all set up like I want. Maybe MS should offer a way to copy
all settings to a new profile. Is there any utility to do this?
thanks
