Xp Service Pack 2

Guest

I just installed severice pack 2 for windows xp.

I am supremely disapointed because my computer will not boot up.

Is this what Microsoft is all about.....

I was an early adobpter I downloade the bata versions and they caused the
same problems. When I posted the problem to Microsoft they evidently chose
to ignore that it caused this on my system.

I fortunatley can now go into safe mode with my system and un install the
service pack. I am concerend however at what problems this will pose for me
in the future. Will I be forces to download the service pack when Microsoft
decides to push it out through their update chanel.

What about the other users I am responsible for. I have to advise 200
sproting goods stores whether or not to update their systems. At this point
since I can't get it running on my laptop I have to say that My confidence is
shot.

Any whay, I was re-booting my laptop when I stated this rant and here we
are 5 minutes later and I get and error message saying the the instruciton
0x7c9105f8 referenced memory @ Dx000000010 the memory could not be "Read"
Does any one know what that means

I couldn't agree with you more. I installed SP2 on a
clean install and the PC wouldn't boot up anymore. I'm
now 4 hour later and I'm redoing the PC as my client
needs it in the morning. I wish Microsoft would get their
act together.

A IT professional advises their customers NOT to install any Major OS
Upgrade as soon as it's released.

Just walk the plank and jump into the unknown water - now or later?..makes
no difference!
There is no guarantee whatsoever :)

guess what, just walked the plank myself - after 7.5 hours downloading
77.4MB SP2. The installation went in 20 minutes, reboot, ding,
dang, dong and I was back to business as usual! Even the network worked
flawless - I had concerns SP2 would stumble over my NetBEUI protocol for the
local network, nada! Office 97Pro seems to work as well, what can I say,
few new icons in the control panel and the spook is over. So far the major
things seem unaffected. System feels more responsive - like the first XP
install. Responsiveness suffered a bit after installing all these security
patches. Now it's as new! guess what, I need a beer!

cheers

So far I've upgraded two of my PCs without any problems. Like most
other people I was a little hesitant after reading other people's
horror stories. Both of my computers, which are home built, updated
flawlessly and except for the Security Panel came out operating the
same way as they were before the updated. I disabled the Security
Panel since I have my own firewall software, Sygate, and use Norton
Anti-virus 2003.

I find all these "can't boot" and "lost all files" etc etc VERY odd. I
installed SP2 onto a three-year old Toshiba Tecra 9000 WITH NO PROBLEMS AT
ALL!
Seems very strange that all these people (presumably with much more up to
date systems) are having all these problems!

Not at all; they have differences that cause their systems to behave
differently. If you read most of the "installation failure" threads,
you'll often see factors that cause the issue wherever they are
present - so if you do not have that factor present, you're OK.

It's as if I said "all this stuff about poisonous mushrooms is
nonsense, I've just eaten a huge plate of vegitables and I'm fine".

Case in point: My test 875P system with Prescott processor is running
perfectly with SP2 (including SP2's Update.sys) after a BIOS upgrade
became available. If I were to install SP2 on that PC now, I too
would say "SP2's fine!", though I would not say "Install it on your
PC, it will work fine there too!" without knowing your PC.

Never turn your back on an installer program
