XP Serivce pack 2, activation and Validation

Guest

I am building an XP machine using my Technet Plus software and after
installing tried to use Windows Update.

It didn't allow me because it couldn't validate my installation as I hadn't
activated XP.

Because I am using XP on virtual server for testing, I don't want to
activate it as I will trash it from time to time. My aim being to sysprep the
updated machine and use it a s a base for new virtual machines.

1st Q - Is it ok to activate Technet eval software all the time or will I
get told that I have had my quota of activations at any time?

2nd Q - How can I update without activating?

3rd Q - If I activate and then try to use sysprep, won't it ask me to
activate again when I create a new virtual machine because the SID and
computer name will change?

4th Q - well a request actually - any plans for the Technet team to do a
"Using Virtual server to create a test environment" that answers things like
how to use yout technet eval software, activation, sysprep etc?

Many thanks!

Now I'm really annoyed.

I tried to download sysprep using my virtual XP machine and guess what - I
can't because I haven't activated.

Unless MS is happy for me to activate every time I want to setup a demo
machine how does it expect me to be able to download tools I need to do my
work?

I am now totally stuck. I don't want to activate because it's only for the
purpose of creating a virtual machine which will become deactivated when i
change it. On the other hand I can't download tools I need because I'm not
activated.

What's the solution?

Your solution is to activate if you need to activate to download what you
need.
1. What does your TechNet EULA state?
That EULA differs from the others.
You probably have unlimited activations on the same equipment.
2. You can't
3. Yes
4. Send the question to Technet.

Thanks!

Technet Plus only gives you 10 activations so I struggle to see how you can
use the software in evaluation mode (grace period of 60 days) if you can't do
anything with it unless you activate.

What is the point of offering evaluation software with a 60 day grace period
that you cannot use because you have to activate it to download anything from
the MS site?

I used to setup virtual machines to test something or solve a problem using
the grace period and just create another virtual machine when I needed to
start from fresh. Now I have to activate in effect limiting me to 10 uses of
the software - I create virtual machines a dozen or so times a week!

I don't want to activate software that I only want to use for half an hour
to try something out - MS even say this in their EULA for technet - along the
lines of if you are evaulating and don't need to use the software for more
than 60 days then dont activate. Why am I paying £300 for technet plus with
evaluation software that I can only evaluate 10 times?

I think you are misunderstanding the EULA.
If it is similar to MSDN, it is not only 10 activations, but 10
installations at a time.
As long as you stay at or below 10 installations, you are OK with the EULA.
Check with Tech Net Customer Service for details.
