XP Roaming Profile Issue

J

Jody Stoll

Hi,
I'm having an issue with XP Roaming profiles. We are using XP in a Win
2k3 domain both SP1 and SP2 machines. The profile ships up and down to
the machine OK and copies all relevant directories to the local machine
and back to the server at logon and logoff time.

The problem occurs when the user wants to login to a different machine.
For example if they sit at a newly imaged machine and installs all their
applications ie Office 2k3 ,Adobe Acrobat etc then they will work fine.
They can log off that machine restart it log back in etc.
If they were then to move to another machine, that has already got these
applications installed to the local drive they will have to spend 10 or
15 minutes reinstalling the applications even though they are installed
locally AND the application Data portion of the local profile is moving
with the user and is poulated with the respective application settings.

From what I have gathered it appears to be related to cached user
profiles on the c:\ drive.
For example in the office where the users sit at the same desk day in
day out if in the GP object i enable the 'delete cached copy of profile'
from the machine then exactly the same thing happens , again the Roaming
Profile roams Ok and all other settings to do with the profile are OK,
for example desktop preferences, toolbars etc are fine, it is just the
applications that are the issue.
While it is fine for the office staff to leave the cached copy of the
profiles on the machine, this will pose a problem in our 1000 seat call
centre.
Currently the call centre use Win 98 while the office are XP but we plan
to move to XP for the call centre in the coming weeks and need to
somehow resolve this.
Any help would be appreciated.

cheers

This behavior is because the applications are installed either by another
user or for the computer or not with the options for All Users.

Jody,

In addition to what Chriss stated, whenever you are using Roaming Profiles
and a user is normally using, say, WIN2000 and then goes to a WIN98 machine
and logs on there will be problems. In other words, having differing OSes
presents a problem. This is just a piece of information for you. An FYI if
you will. You are clearly using only WINXP Pro....well, in the office.

More later!
