XP restarts on attempted shutdown....

When I attempt to shutdown my PC, it goes through the entire process of
shutting down, but then restarts again. Upon getting back into Windows I
receive a message that Windows has just recovered from a serious error and
gives me the option of sending an error report. MS error reporting claims
that it is a fault with my video card drivers (all of a sudden) so I loaded
the most recent version only to have the problem remain. Note that I get the
same error if I attempt to do a restart as well. The MS error is identified
as the following Error Message: STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER
(Q293078)

However, when I run windbg I get the following output from any one of the
dump files which seems to identify sonypvl3.sys as the problem:

This only took about 30 seconds on Google... If it solves your problem,
maybe you should try doing a search for yourself in the future. It just
might be faster than waiting around for a proper answer here...

Try these message boards. Sounds like you may find your answer here:

dear baffled..
hopefully it is as easy to solve as Femaster states.
my similar problem said it was caused by my usb flash driver
In the end i dont think this was the real error. it also migrated to my
laptop have no idea how.
what worked for me was going back to a system restore point from before the
problem
i had a few problems with norton on one machine but finally got there.
There are other threads on this forum relating to restart and error messages.

Thanks FeMaster! The techspot find did the trick. I didn't come across this
one when I googled for the problem. Maybe because I last googled it over a
week ago... :) I had the Sony software installed as well.

By the way, given the timing of the appearance of the other users issue and
mine, I suspect that this was probably triggered by a recent MS (security?)
update. This is not too far removed from the IE problems that previously
occurred for anyone that had HP image sharing software installed.

Thanks again....

Glad it worked out for you!

I'm also glad that you didn't take offense to the way I worded my post to
you. After re-reading it, I can see where someone might have taken it the
wrong way... It wasn't meant to be derogatory towards you, only that you
would probably save yourself a lot of time by searching for it, instead of
actually trying to get a proper answer through the group here...
