XP Repair propblems

Hi,
I randomly turned on my laptop one day and I was greeted with a message
abour hal.dll being missing or corrupt. I ran system restore and replaced
this file from the xp pro cd. Then it said the same thing for ntoskrnl.exe.
So i did the same thing and replaced it - both had somehow completely
dissapeared from the computer. After that, yet another error came up (before
the xp loading screen - they stopped the whole booting process) that i
couldnt fix. So i booted the XP cd and went into windows setup, and i chose
to install xp. I let it try to repair the existing installation that it had
found, and started copying files quite hapily.

Then it restarted, it made it past the loading screen and went into xp
setup. I thought my troubles were over then....... but now, it asks for some
asms folder or file, which i would gladly select when the dialog appears, but
i have no keyboard or mouse! None of them work. I've tried using the laptops
keyboard and touchpad, a usb mouse and a ps/2 keyboard. Unless i can somehow
get a way of inputting the information, i cant get any further.

I then installed xp in a different folder so i was able to use the computer.
So now i have two xp installations on the same partition. My problem is i
want to use all my programs, but they cant be used properly in my second xp
installation, and i have a tonne of data in the my documents folder, which
cannot be accessed. XP will deny me access to any of those folders from the
1st xp installation. I found a way to move the data with backup, but i have
so much that i cant move it all as i'd run out of disk space.

I could backup all this to DVD's, but my dvd writer also has some problem
where it gets to the very end of writing dvd's and says "burn process failed"
in Nero. Anyway thats not whats important. Does anyone know how to get the
keyboard and mouse working so i can finish the repair installation?

Thanks,
David

David,
Your computer could have a virus. I would reformat the drive and
reinstall the operating system.

As for the access denied messages, read this article on taking ownership of
the file on the old copy of your OS:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421

Some other sites that also relate to this problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810881
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811151
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=308418

This should let you recover your data. Your programs are another problem
altogether. It's very, very difficult to do this, and I have no real
experience with it.
