XP Reinstallation problems (with Linux)

Very recently, I installed Linux Mandrake 10.1 on a custom built machine
running XP home.
A problem occurred in the installation of Mandrake which required me to
restart the computer.
Ever since Linux worked, however XP didn't.
I then tried reinstalling XP in the relevant partition and this got as far
as the reboot and then died (N.B. I did a reset)
Ever since I haven't been able to use any OS or even boot off the XP CD!

The hard drive this happened on was a 200GB HDD using SATA-150.
When I substituted for a 40GB IDE HDD the installation CD works.

I'm just hoping that the SATA drive isn't damaged beyond repair but if
anyone's got any ideas into installing XP onto it then I'd like to know

Thanks is advance

FWIW:::I could not get any of the latest Linux distros to work with SATA if
they were loaded with a BIOS of their own. I tried Mandrake, SUSE, Fedora,
Bonzei, and Ubuntu. I did get Debian net install to work with 2 individual
SATA
drives as (hd0) /dev/sda and (hd1) /dev/sdb. I could not even get Debian
to work
using partitions on one drive. SATA raid won't work at all. I am not
saying that
this can't be done. I am saying that I gave up on trying different distros
and
different configurations.

You need to use the F6 option at setup and load SATA drivers for the drive
(these need to be on a floppy.)

Loading Windows XP on a SATA drive
http://cruftbox.com/blog/archives/000867.html
OK, I will do that next time. But the problem at the moment is that i can't
get into the installation program at all. Lilo won't opperate and, @ the
moment, I don't have the Mandrake CDs with me (thoes I can get to tomorrow).

The odd thing is that when I installed XP (the the time it worked) I didn't
load that SATA driver but yet the system still opperated normally. It's not
working now as a result of the installation of the OS's (linux and XP).

I got my spare IDE drive working with the system, and I could still read the
windows partition on the SATA drive. I tried to format that through windows
rebooted and tried the CD installation again (didnt work:<)

I think one possible solution is to borrow a linux live CD, off a friend,
and try a full format of all the partitions on the SATA HDD.

I'll give that a go, probably tomorrow, unless there are any other solutions
;)

Thanks

N.B. I have a Abit AS8 Mobo (See lionk below)

I managed to get mandrake working on the SATA HDD, no probs.
Just, in the installation, it froze and the computer had to be restarted.
Thats whats caused XP to stop working. Which verson of Mandrake did you try,
because v.10.1 worked fine for me? And I did manage to use mandrake with
partitions.

Thanks anyway

Further to the problems, I have now managed to reinstall XP (by using
mandrake to do a full format)

At some point I'll try the install on mandrake to see if it will work this
time. But @ least I know how to fix it now :>

Thanks for all of you're help
