XP Reinstall

I have a Dell laptop that had Widows XP on it. It is out of warranty with
Dell and I won't pay for fee based help. Dell did not give me a copy of XP or
any type of recovery discs when I bought the laptop even though I paid for a
license for the copy of XP that came on it which I think is rediculous.
Anyway the hard drive failed and I replaced it. I built a desktop and
installed XP Home on it awhile back. Does anyone know if I can use that disk
to install XP on the laptop but use the product key for the copy that came on
the Dell? A friend told my that he thinks that the product key is the license
and any XP disk can be used for the installation. I emailed Dell 5 days ago
about this and haven't gotten a reply yet so as usual, Dell is going to be
useless and I refuse to buy another copy of XP since I already have a license
for the original copy. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!

Ummm.... Why don't you simply try it? I don't think it's going to work, but
it will take you maybe 15 minutes to find out for sure.

Your laptop no doubt had a "Recovery" partition of some kind, though without
knowing the model I can't say which particular method was used.

Why are you waiting on email support from Dell when you can Chat or phone
them?

If the product key on your Dell laptop is for XP Home, then yes your XP Home
cd can be used. If the product key on your Dell laptop is for XP Home OEM
then you cannot use the XP cd you already have and would have to find a copy
of XP Home OEM. Same goes for XP Pro.
Of course you will also have to download and install all the drivers for the
laptop, motherboard chipset, video, sound, network, etc.

What kind of disk is it? Retail? Generic OEM?

It's an OEM disk. I took a flyer and tried it and it worked. Now I have to
got to the Dull, I mean Dell web site and download all of the drivers etc.
but I'm not going to install any Dell software 'cause that stuff probably
slows things down some and I don't need it anyway. Thanks

It worked. The disk I bought was OEM from Newegg.com and now all I have to do
is go on the Dull, I mean Dell web site and download and install all of the
drivers it needs and none of the Dell software 'cause it probably slows the
machine down some and I don't need it anyway. Thanks

It worked. The disk I bought for the other computer was OEM from Newegg.com
and everything went great. I just don't know what's going to happen when I
activate it but I still have to download and install all of the drivers, etc..
Thanks

I had pretty much the same problem with my Dell laptop. HDD failed, got a new
one and called Dell about getting XP re installed and they sent me XP, Dell
MediaDirect, Drivers and DVD software disks.

Have you tried calling them again as they suggested they send me the disks!!!
