XP recognising folder sizes

I recently had to buy a new hard drive thanks to catastrophic XP registry
error. To prevent the same problem, I partitioned my hard drive into a small
Cdrive (8GB) section for the operating system and the rest (D drive)for the
folders.
I then used TweakUI to redirect all my special folders onto my bigger D
drive. It all worked fine, but when I tried to download SP2, I got an error
message because of insufficient space.
Right clicking on C drive properties, it says that 5.5GB of space is used.
If I go into the drive (looking at hidden folders as well) and add up the
folder sizes I get around 2.3MB.
If I goin into my special folders, in actuality there are very few on C
drive, most of them being on D drive where TweakUI redirected them. However
right clicking on the folder on C drive still gives a file allocation space
for the files on D drive as well.
How can I get XP to correct the file allocation sizes and correctly give the
space left on C drive?

Try running scandisk for drive C.
If there is a problem with calculated free space, scandisk should fix it.

Just right click on drive C in my computer and select:
Properites > Tools > Error-checking > "Check Now ..."
Then select both of the checkboxes, ckick start, "yes" and restart.

have Folder Options - View set to show Hidden files, and *not* Hide
Protected mode ones and look again. There are a lot of such hidden
files in XP. What I suggest is:

Run Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - disk cleanup
and clean up all items, in particular use the 'More Options' to delete
all but the most recent restore point. (SP2 is going to make a very big
restore point anyway).

Perhaps if pagefile.sys is big, put it for the moment on the other
drive; at Control Panel - System - Advanced - Performance Settings -
Advanced - Virtual Memory Click Change. Select C and set Custom -
Initial 2, Max 50, *click Set* then select your other drive, set
whatever you had for C and again click Set. OK out and reboot. It is
not really as good on the second partition, but will not get in the way

Check out your Program Files folder - third party software may have
installed things in there you did not know of. You could move some of
the big ones temporarily to the other drive. SP2 install uses a lot of
space, but you can recover most of it afterwards once things have
settled down - see Tidying up in the forum Installing SP2:
