XP random Crash - IRQ Problems?

Hello,

My windows XP crashes on me at random times. It can happen when playing
music, browsing the web, even when its sitting idol, with no software
running. On rebooting the PC, i sometimes get an error message, saying
XP has recovered from a serious error - XP sends a report to MS, and MS
come back saying its a device driver error, but they dont have a
resolution to the problem.

I have recently bought a new harddrive, and installed xp on it - soon
after, the problems started again, so i have ruled out the hardrive as
the source.

I have unplugged my soundcard and used on board sound, yet it still
crash's. Im thinking it could be an IRQ/motherboard problem. My
motherboard is around 4 years old, and some resistors are getting a tad
rusty - not sure if this is effecting the system or not.

So I decided to try installing xp again, as a "standard pc" to ease the
load on the IRQ's, but during the xp setup, it crashed on me again !
Please note i have no less than 3 fans inside my machine, so its not
over heating.

I work in I.T yet this has totally baffled me, Ive even taken the PC to
a pc repair shop, and still no joy ! I Im thinking of a new, more
modern motherboard all together, im hopign this will sort it, but not
sure.

Any comments/advice is most welcome

Resistors can't rust. What you are seeing is discoloration due to excessive
heat. I would say it is time for a new motherboard.

The resistors does not rust but there was a "bad" batch of capacitors where
the "fluid" inside them would leak out and make a "crust", damaging the
motherboard.
