XP Professional Hangs on Shutdown

When attempting to shutdown my Thinkpad A30, it goes
through the process but hangs on the very last screen. I
have to remove the battery and pull the power cord to get
it to completely shutdown. (Usually, I can do a restart
with no problem.) I have scanned for adware using three
different updated programs (to no avail). Of course, I am
current with my antivirus updates. I don't know if it is
related but my home page (http://my.yahoo.com) always
comes up as a "white page" with an extra "t" in the
address line, i.e., htttp, even though I have entered and
applied the correct address many times in Internet
Options. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
