Xp prof upgrade Invalid Driver

When we upgraded my husbands Dell Latitude D400 from windows 2000 prof to the
xp prof. It would no longer connect to the internet and keeps asking to
install the driver. When we install the driver it keeps saying its an invalid
driver. We cant go back to the 2000 and cant connect to the internet. Can
anyone help.
