* XP Pro + SP2 never shuts down on first attempt *

K

Kumaran

Dear Experts,
I'm having Windows XP Pro + SP2 on P4 3.2GHz, 512 MB RAM, Compaq Presario.

When ever I click on "Turn off", it never shuts down at the first attempt,
some times it just logs off or nothing happens. But it succeeds on the
second attempt.

Is there any fix for this peculiar problem.

Regards
Kumaran

Skip the first shutdown attempt and go straight to the second one.

That really doesn't address the Original Poster's root problem, does it?
Kumaran, here is a link to an excellent shutdown troubleshooter:

http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

What is happening is that some program or process is reluctant to shut
down gracefully. Since malware often causes this symptom, make sure
your computer is 100% spyware and virus-free. If you need help with the
latter, please post back to this thread.

Good luck,

Malke

I was wondering when someone would notice. Now anyone under the age of
thirty is going to think you've lost your mind.

I just did the math--I should have said "anyone under the age of forty."
Holy crap.

I'm over 50 so I can recall Bill Saluga's routine quite well. I still see
him there with his zoot suit and cigarette on the Redd Foxx Comedy Show (not
Sanford and Son).

Sure, if the source were only one possible cause but it can be any number of
things.

Something is hanging the system on shutdown.
First, be sure your antivirus software has the latest definitions and run a
virus scan.

Second, download, install and run Ad Aware:
www.lavasoftusa.com
Note: you should always be well backed up before running an application of
this type.

If your system is clear of viruses, open Control Panel, open System, go to
the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery, remove the
check from "Automatically Restart" under System Failure. This will cause
the system to blue screen instead of restarting on errors and the
information on the blue screen may give a clue as to the source of the
issue.

Open Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, open Event Viewer, look for
errors corresponding to the crash, double click the error, the information
contained within may give a clue as to the
source of the problem. If you don't understand the information inside, the
third button down in that dialog box will copy the information,
you can then paste it into a message and post it here and maybe we can
figure out what is going on.

Assuming you have an XP CD and not a recovery CD, place the XP CD in the
drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility,"
the report it generates may point to problem hardware or software on your
system. If you do not have an XP CD, you can download this application
known as the Upgrade Advisor from the following site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp
Note: If you have access to a broadband connection it might be best to
download using that as this is a rather large download.

Check for the latest drivers for your hardware, especially your graphics
card and soundcard and all peripherals connected to your system. Do not use
Windows Update for this, go to the device manufacturer's web sites and if
you install updated drivers, ignore the message about drivers being unsigned
by Microsoft. *Before installing any drivers, be sure you are well backed
up and it's probably a good idea to manually create a restore point in
System Restore in case you have problems as a result of the driver update
and note, System Restore is not a substitute for a backup. Start\All
Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore

For restart, shortcut with target of

C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -r -t 0

often works better than normal restart. I only shutdown 4
vacation, but changing last 3 arguements to God knows what
will effect that 2.

My guess is that since it logs u OFF, all buffers r empty &
Registry is updated so u may be safe to cut POWER. Not sure
tho.

Any advise given is my attempt to show appreciation for all
the excellent help I've received here but I'm no MVP so it
may only apply NUGS (Normally, Usually, Generally, Sometimes :)

Hi Minsik,
What is the name of the host file.
Where did you find (the path) it.
What did you change in the file....
