XP Pro Setup (upgrade) Fails after Initial Attempt was interupted

We had a machine running XP pro for over a year, but we had bought this
machine from someone that supplied us with an install disk that was not
original MS. We purchased XP pro sp2 from a retail store yesterday so that we
could upgrade to the latest version and use the online updates to keep the
machine current.

We wanted to upgrade the version of XP on the system so we do not lose our
environment and NTFS protected files.

During the upgrade process there was an error of somekind while the setup
was copying files and the machine re-booted. I didn't have time to read the
message before the screen cleared.

We rerun setup and the setup program tells us that a setup was in progress
and gives us the option to upgrade again. We select upgrade and the following
occurs...

1) Setup Copies the files...
2) Setup Reboots
3) I see the Windows XP Logo Screen
4) I see a screen that says "setup is being restarted......"
5) then I see a blanks screen that flashes the mouse pointer and the
hourglass for no longer then 10 seconds
6) then the machine re-boots and starts the cycle over...

We installed a seperate copy of windows on another disk on this machine and
it worked fine.

How can we resume the upgrade so that we don't lose our original environment
and NTFS secured files?

thanks,

bob

If youre running xp pro, thier is no "upgrade to another xp pro" pro is already
installed.Depending on the disk that was given to you, probably an oem,you can
reinstall xp (new copy),but youll need to reformat the disk. Why not save
youre
files to cd,if settings and/or files also, run the File Transfer Wizard, set
computer
as old, select what data youd like it to save, run the data to a new folder
that you
create, when its thru, move folder to cd.To install new copy, install xp
cd,exit the
info page,restart computer,boot to xp cd,then select install xp,new
copy,delete
the partition, create one, then xp will format and install automatically. To
boot to
cd,youll need to adjust in BIOS,boot device priority or similiar.

Andrew,

Thanks for the reply... The problem is that we have already started and we
were just hoping that we didn't have to do a full install.

We were running the XP Pro sp2 Install disk with XP pro already installed on
the computer and booting from cd when the problem started.

We were hoping that there was a way to clean up a failed setup so that it
would still upgrade.
