XP Pro "Repair" problem

I am trying to use my XP Pro disk to do an XP Repair. Below I will detail the
steps I do and the problem I end up with:

1. Boot up with the XP disk in the cd rom

2. Go to the point where I get the option to “enter R for repairâ€

3. The PC goes into DOS mode and I get asked “which windows installation
would you like to log ontoâ€. I enter the number “1â€.

4. Then I am asked to type “Administrator Passwordâ€. I have no
administrator password so I leave the space blank and just hit enter.

5. I then get the prompt “C:\Windows>â€.

6. At this point I am stuck. Because it does not matter what I enter, I
keep getting a message that says “command not recognizedâ€.

I would really like to move past this and use the XP Repair option. All help
and suggestions appreciated.

Wrong R..

Reboot with the XP CD..

Go through the process, until you reach the second request to repair..

To add to Mikes' reply - XP offers two repair options - the first being the
Recovery Console - as Mike states, ignore this option - setup proceeds and
it will find and list the XP installation - at this point you will be
offered the option to repair the listed installation. Although the "repair"
is actually and upgrade installation you may want to consider backing up
crucial data.

Using your original Windows Setup CD, boot from the CD and follow all the
instructions until you get to the point where Setup finds your current
Windows installation. Just follow the instructions posted at one of the web
sites below, read each of the steps carefully so you understand what you
will be doing step by step before you actually start the repair process.
Windows will keep your previous settings, including applications and device
drivers.

Word of warning: Always backup any important data files just in case
things don't go as expected. Read all three articles mention below
"carefully" and see if a Repair Install meets your needs

Finally go to Windows Update site and install all the updates as they will
need to be reinstalled.
