XP pro killing software install

Hi. I just upgraded from XP home to pro and since this XP has been systematically stopping any software from being installed. The applications begin to run and as soon as they start copying files/creating files BAM they get killed. No error message, just kills the program. This is very annoying.
I am the admin user.
The PC is Dell Dimension DIM4400
Intel pent 4 1.90 Ghz
1 G ram.
GeForce 6800 GS/XT video card.
Any ideas from the bunch out there? Any setting I should look into? It never kills programs that are running, just programs trying to install.
