Hello all:

I am upgrading from Win98 SE to XP Pro doing a full
installation. The computer upgrades fine until about 13
minutes remaining and then its hangs for an eternity (once
for an entire night)--while going through the process
of "registering components."

thanks much for any help in advance.

Well, this is kind of hard to say. The cause depends on what you are doing:

1. If this is a clean install of the operating system (you formatted and
installed clean) it is usually due to a harware incompatibility. Make
certain that your system bios is up to date. Failing that try installing
forcing a standard hal. This is done by pressing F5 and selecting "standard
hal" from the list that appears. The process here is the same as it is for
W2k:

2. If you are upgrading an existing os then it is hitting a software or
driver which is incompatible. Uninstall any virus scanner, cdburning
software or anything else that might not be compatible with the new os or
use MSCONFIG to clean boot the box before installing. You can also try the
above step here if this does not resolve it.
