XP Pro installation fails on multiprocessor

Had too many problems with my upgrade to XP Pro from Windows 2000 Pro
so I tried a clean installation and it fails everytime once the GUI
part of the installation starts. I am down to a bare bones machine
with 2 PIII's, Adaptec scsi controller and one scsi disk, video card,
mouse, keyboard AND to top it all off I have replaced each one with an
identical one just to be 100% sure.

Machine just hangs, reboot tries to rerun setup but that also fails.
Any idea what I am looking at?

This is an IBM Intellistation M-Pro.

I had a similar problem once on a single processor setup. A BIOS update
fixed the issue for me.

Well you can forget returning to set up if it fails, just start a new
installation.
If youre BIOS is set correctly for hardware, then install xp cd,boot to xp
cd,press
F6 to install scsi drivers, then try recovery, forget what the text might say
and
type:DiskPart In DiskPart,delete the partition(s),then create one,then press
Esc key,either type:FORMAT C: /FS:ntfs or type:EXIT Then reboot to xp cd,
install xp.

No I do a fresh install from the CD and delete the Win XP partition.
But the same thing happens again and again.
