XP Pro install reboots to blank screen

I was donated a computer. I have formatted the disk and ran the install for
XP Pro. It gets through the install and restarts. I see the Windows XP
screen then the screen goes blank and the monitor turns off. Sound like the
hard drive is still running but nothing on the monitor. I tried starting
over and reformatting disk drive to same results. I have tried repairing the
installation to same results. The video card is a VGA/DVI video and have
tried both types of monitors.

Any suggestions?

I believe it's related somehow to the BIOS. I have had the similar issues
when Windows couldn't pick up an AGP card - no splash screen at all in
either Safe or VGA modes, but green (not amber) monitor power indicator
light.
