XP pro install problems

I was having some difficulty with win XP so decided to to do a clean
install.

Computer has two 60 gig Hd's. I booted from the Cd and formated the C
drive using the NTFS file system.

Windows then copies the installation files and reboots the computer
prompting me to boot from the cd (cd rom is the first boot device) then
loads the drivers then prompts to install windows. I accept the license
agreement then asks me to select the drive i want to install Windows
and shows C: partition1 {NTFS} 56644 free. Unpartitioned space 6 mb.

If I try to install it prompts to format which only starts the process
over.

Any help would be appreciated.

This is your problem right here:

"reboots the computer prompting me to boot from the cd"

You are only supposed to boot from the cd *once*, when you start the
installation process. After the machine reboots and you see the "press any
key to boot from cd" prompt, sit on your hands and don't touch the
keyboard! The installation will then proceed as it should.

I am aware of that, I should have been a little more clear.

after the "Press any key to boot from cd"....command an "Error loading
operating system" message appears and computer no longer responds.

Then you have hardware issues. Since I don't know what problems you were
having before, I can't give you specific advice.

Test the hardware in this order:

1. Installation cd itself - is it an original or a bad burn? Scratched? Does
it work in another machine?
2. Optical drive.
3. RAM
4. Hard drive
5. Power supply

Here are general hardware troubleshooting steps:

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts with
known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).

Funny... I had no major problems before I started.

One thing I found strange is that it doesn't see either HD unless they
run together. No sure why I only have data on the D drive..no programs.
