possible solution at the bottom

Im having problems w/ my mup.sys having the same problems
you are (granted a different initial route to the problem).
I wanted to touch base w/ you to provide you with the
information about my case (maybe some of the steps that I
have tried will work for you and possibly if you find a
cure you can relay that information back to me).
Thanks,
Kim gick
(
im having this same problem ... not on the hardware side
but on the software side mup.sys
this is what ive done and where im at:
power computer on-
gets to the menu screen (safe mode/safe mode w.networking/
etc etc)
no matter what i select the computer either
a)reboots
or
b)gets to the windows splash screen about 2 passes on the
grafix load display and then it locks and will not power
off
this is what ive done so far
updated the bios
ran pc doctor (ibm diag utility) no error messages
opened case (to see if there were any fans malfunctioning)
next:
removed the hdd
put it in another machine and copied all of the data files
put hdd back in
hit f11
took me to the system menu
selected full restore
{restored machine back to factory settings}
rebooted
still sticks on the loading screen (see post 1)
hmmm .... this is fishy
im thinking:
a) remove the hdd and reformat it and reload the os
or
b) could this be a hardware problem?
thanks in advance!
and then this:
i removed the cd writer
removed the pci modem
removed the ram
added a stick of ram from a working computer
still same problems
it looks to cycle thru the loading windows xp home screen
4-5 times rebooting about 3-10 seconds into load
when i go to safe mode it still hangs at mup.sys
im thinking i might try using a powersupply that i know
works ... other than that im at my wits end

How does one install from CD on a PowerPC?
A:
1. Insert CD and reboot, if machine is on, or boot
machine and insert CD
2. After machines goes through the boot cycle -
<hdisk, network, ..., speaker> hit PF1 key to tell the
machine that you want to go into System Management
Services
3. Insert SMS diskette, if necessary, and wait until
SMS starts
4. Once in SMS, change the boot order so that the
CDROM drive is the first boot device
5. Exit out of SMS and continue booting; now the
user should see CD activity indicating that the machine is
booting off the CDROM
6. Respond accordingly to the questions defining the
environment:
a. Which display to use during install
b. What language to use during install
7. Once at the Install/Maintenance screen, the user
will notice three options. Choose option two to change
install preferences.
8. Choose which installation method is preferred:
Migration, Preservation, or Complete Overwrite.
9. Verify that all hdisks on install machine area
selected
10. Choose to continue with selected options and the
install process will start
Clear the BIOS using the Password reset procedure in the
User's guide or Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM). Does
this fix the lockup or hang problem?
Verify all cooling fans are running and the airflow is not
blocked.
Reseat all hardware, adapters, and memory. Does the system
lockup or hang?

Windows halt after loading mup.sys during boot-up
[Windows XP] | 12/1/2002 2:36:46 AM | Posted by Larry
*I know exactly how mad and frustrated you are now. Be
calm and try not to throw your PC out of the window.
This problem took me two days to figure out. My Windows XP
got stuck during the startup. Booting in safe mode clearly
showed that the computer stopped responding after loading
Mup.sys.
I tried almost everything including numerous re-installs
and even wiped out my RAID array, but still got no good
news. Many helpful forums and sites suggested different
problem sources: enabling APIC, NT File System, updating
BIOS, etc. After countless hours of trial and error, I
finally found the problem source: the USB 2.0 card. Taking
the card out resolved my problem.
If you encountered a similar problem, try to take out your
PCI cards one-by-one. You might be able to boot-up again.
Good luck!
I get the message that some system files have been
replaced. I assume that this is related to the real
problem that my computer will not boot up after I shut it
down. When it starts up in safe mode it gets to the
MUP.SYS files then freezes.
I need to boot from my CD then repair the windows
installation. The system will then run normally (other
than message about system files being replaced). Once I
shut down, however, the system once again will not boot
up.
When you boot to Safe Mode MUP.SYS happens to be usually
the last file
that was loaded. So this suggests something is going
wrong during the
initialisation of devices after that - and the strong
suspect is video
drivers.
So get things running - even if only in Safe Mode, and
then run
MSConfig.exe and on the Boot.ini page check /BASEVIDEO -
which is just
the most basic 800x600 video, but all else normal. See if
things will
run correctly then. If they do, get updated drivers from
the web site
of the makers of the video card (If it is based on an
nvidia chipset I
would get them from
www.nvidia.com; for an ATI one from
www.atitech.ca)
And check while you are in MSconfig for things loading in
Startup -
something coming up and changing files in a newly repaired
installation
(resulting in that message from FIle Protection) suggests
something
running that you do *not* want around
)
