XP PRO Hanging and boot problem (again)

A

AT and HMB

AMD Athlon 64 (running at 32) 3200+ 2.21GHz 1GB ram.
System hanging within about 1 minute after booting to windows.
Very consistent fail.
I thought it might be overheating and recorded temperatures at last fail
this morning. These were:
v core 1.06
3.3v 3.28
5v 4.97
12v 12.2
cpu 42 C
sys 42 C
NB N/A
cpu fan speed 1125rpm
NB fan speed 0rpm

Over many readings the power supplies from the Power Supply unit are very
consistent
I have alternative processors, MB to replace, but wondered if there was
something obvious I was missing.

Incidentally, this current session is the first of about 10 that has held up
this morning, and the temperatures are considerably higher than when I got
fails earlier on.
v core has moved from 1.06 to 1.34
cpu to 44
sys to 50/56
cpu fan speed to 1147/1155
Should the sys temperature be so high in relation to the cpu temp.?

Very Curious Side Effect.
On this site some days ago, I reported my system consistently hung for 5
minutes right at start with an option to go to the BIOS or Boot manager.
Following help from this group, I eventually got into boot (F11) to find
that first boot preference was LS 120, which I have never had.
Prior to this current session, the system reverted to hanging at start.
Activating F11, I got:
Floppy (highlighted)
LS 120
Hard disk
CD rom
and many others.
(these do NOT align with my options in the BIOS)
Note: this screen does NOT give options of providing an order for booting,
just the choice of default.
I chose hard disk and that solved the problem, but as I said last time, why
should this happen and in any case why does the thing take 5 minutes to
decide there is no LS 120.
Help please

Sounds like you have a hardware error.

Remove everything other than the bare minimum and boot. Does everything
work? if yes add one more device and try again. This way you can isolate the
cause of the problem, take it outside and jump on it.

If a base system does not work (Boot) I suggest you buy a new PC from a
major h/w supplier.

If you are convinced it's the OS then download a linux OS that runs from CD
like knoppix: http://knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html, boot from this and
see if the problems persist. if they do, it's definately a h/w issue.

If you think it may be overheating you can do several things to help.

1 - Clean dust from CPU and inside computer. All fans and airways.

2 - Apply CPU grease to aid in the displacement of heat.

3 - Boot in safe mode with no/minimum devices loaded to see if it is a
software driver problem.
