XP Pro file missing??

Hi There,

I have a friend who's system won't get into his Windows XP Pro. It comes up
with a statement just before going to the screen that says (I am pretty
sure)

missing or corrupt file Windows/system32/config/system if that makes sense.
What should I do? How do I get there system to start up?

Indicates a corrupted registry, he will need to work from the Recovery
