I have a Toshiba Satellite 5105-S702 Laptop (Win XP Pro pre-installed by
Toshiba), Pentium 4, 1.8MHz, 512 MB RAM, 60GB HDD. The HDD was
re-partitioned, using Partition Magic 7, into 4 partitions, C: - Local Disk
(OS), D:- Applications, E: - Data & Downloads, F: - Backups.
I have been having trouble running "chdsk e: /f" and "chkdsk c: /f" from
the run command when in Windows XP (eg start>run>chdsk e: /f). Get the error
message :
"Chkdsk cannot run because this volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk
may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS
VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this
volume ? (Y/N)".
What does all of that mean ?
To play safe I entered "N", and got the message :
"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would
you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system
restarts ? (Y/N)
I entered "Y", turned off the computer and then re-started it, but I did not
see any evidence of "chkdsk e: /f " or "chkdsk c: /f " running.
Is there any way of configuring the boot processs that you can see what is
happening ?
By the way, I did not have any problems running "chdsk d: /f " and "chdsk f:
/f ".
Also no prblems running "chdsk c:" and "chdsk e:"
What is the procedure for booting directly into the DOS command prompt
(C:/ ) ? I thought that I might try running "chkdsk e: /f " and "chkdsk c:
/f " from there instead.
Thank you
