XP Pro cannot obtain IP address from DHCP

Chad

I have an installation of XP Pro that has recently stp obtaining IP
information from the DHCP server. I can manually set the IP address
and the machine will see and connect to other computers on the network
but it can not access the internet. Everything with the routing seems
to be correct and I'm not sure what else to address to try to correct
the issue. Any assistance would be greatly apprecciated.

Thanks,

Chad

Dear Chad,

Do you have a third party firewall? Is this a home or corporate
network?

A big bang approach - open device manager - Unistall the network
device - reboot - Network device is re-installed & driver settings are
refreshed.

Hope that helps.

Also,

Did you say Trojan? That PC is now compromised. Google for trojan
removal instructions. Fix that first!

Maybe a dumb question, but are you sure the DHCP server is still
alive?
Run Wireshark (Ethereal) to watch the DHCP request being sent.
Run Wireshark on the DHCP server if it's a Windows box, and watch the
DHCP request arrive, and the response sent.

If the DHCP is being done by a WinXP machine with Internet Connection
Sharing (ICS), has someone changed the ICS? This might have stopped
the DHCP, NAT and routing functions.

Good Luck.

Is the Workgroup name the same name as the Local Domain Name that is
shown in the router ?
Log into the router and check to see what the Local Domanin Name is.
Then right click My Computer on the Desktop or Start Menu
Click the Computer Name tab
Check the Workgroup: name

I had to 'rename this computer' to match the Local Domain Name to get
DHCP working again after the RPC update was installed last week [KB933729]
