XP PRO boot problem "missing operating system"

SFS

XP PRO on Laptop with all the files compressed. I just use this PC for
remote access to work.

In recovery console off XP boot disk:

Windows is located on d: And all the files are there.

d:\map (shows)

D: NTFS 4102 meg
\device\harddisk0\partition1
C: 8 meg
\device\harddisk0\partition2
A:
\device\floppy0
E:
\device\CDRom0

It looks like it is trying to boot off c: rather than d:
(Actually D: should be C:)

Any suggestions as how to fix this?

(This occurred while trying to ghost the disk with Norton.)

Thanks

Was the boot disk always D, or has the drive letter changed after ghosting,
and what exectly did you do when you ran ghost?

I plugged an external 2.5 USB drive in to the laptop. XP found the drive. I
ran Ghost. It started and I left for work as I knew this would take a long
time. When I came back 'Missing operating system " was on the screen. There
was nothing on the 2.5 drive.

I don't believe there was a D drive before. Unless that has something to do
with the compression?

Sounds like it tried to ghost to the 8mb partition instead..
What you can try, and there is no gurantee this will work but it may.
Boot with a floppy or an xp CD and delete the 8mb C drive.
That will leave the D drive as the only partition and and should default it
back to C.
