XP Pro and Home File sharing issues

I currently have a host computer running XP Pro SP2 and a Client Laptop
running XP Home SP2 both connected through the internet with a linskys
router.

I have turned off the firewalls on both machines and simple file sharing is
enabled on the Pro Host. I have run the home network wizard and both
computers have the same name for their workgroup. My host (Pro) can see
both computers in the workgroup and can access the laptop's share folder, but
on my laptop I can see both computers in the workgroup, but cannot access my
desktop nor see it's shared folders. I have read that it should be a
firewall problem, but that is off on both machines.

I have tried turning on and off Internet Connection Sharing on my laptop,
but nothing.

What firewall did you disable? What antivirus protection do you have?

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked

Disabling NIS (NPF and NAV both have firewall components!!) may not be the most
productive thing you can do - disabling Norton products is better left untried.
Either un install, following Symantec instructions, or re enable and configure
properly.

I have succesfully been able to share my files now by reformatting my laptop
with XP Pro...I planned on doing this and figured this was as good as time as
ever.
Now that I am able to share files I have another little hiccup. When I try
and access my shared files over the network it is VERY SLOW! I have read
some postings on it and went into the registry to delete a key so that
windows wont search for a scheduling or something when it accesses the share,
but that didn't help. I mapped my share and that didn't speed it up either.
Any suggestions?

I was able to fix my problem of viewing and accessing my shared network files
by setting the following registry setting on all computers:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters
DhcpNodeType set to an 8 for "Hybrid" or a 4 for "Mixed". When you see
'Unknown' in the Node Type (doing an ipconfig /all) it means that there
either is no entry for DhcpNodeType, or it is set to 0. I don't know the why
or wherefore, but there you have it.

However, like you, I also am having VERY SLOW access to shared files on
other computers on my network. I haven't found an explanation yet.

I think wboston has the correct information. The web site he points to also
points to http://support.microsoft.com/?id=160177 which again talks about the
Node Type. The machine I am having the problem has it set to 4 or 'Mixed'.
I am now trying it set to 8 or 'Hybrid'. Will let you know the result.
