xp pro activation - requested each bootup!

andy

Hi there,

I have xp pro installed on one of my PCs, a few days ago it told me I had
seven days to activate it, totally out of the blue, no hardware changes at
all.

I activated it with microsoft on the phone as it wouldn't activate online
(too many times it said, ?) microsoft activated it no problem, it's all
legit.

But now it's been coming up for activation each time I boot it up!!

Any ideas?

Go to
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows
and see if *that* says you are activated. If so, the problem is that
the boot-time warning has not got disabled. I am not at all sure how
that gets invoked; but the file that does it is
windows\system32\wpabaln.exe and you could rename that

Hi Alex, I have no wpabaln.exe file on my system, just done a search. I have
explorer set to show all files as well, hidden, system files etc.

Found the file now in windows\system32\dllcache

I'll rename it and try rebooting see what happens, but just to clarify my
situation...

I'm not getting the reminder at the bottom of the screen to activate,
windows won't actually let me in unless I activate.

I hope this can be fixed, will not be happy if I have to re-install and
start again.

Tried that, same problem.

Other ideas?

One in dll cache is a reserve in case of the primary one being deleted,
so it is not that. The other possibility always is a virus damaging the
activation record files - windows\system32\wpa.dbl and wpa.bak. It is a
good idea anyway to have those backed up (they easily fit on a floppy)
against accidents; a virus though would probably be hitting straight off
at boot

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your reply, I've done a bit of googling and also come up with the
idea it could be a virus, although Norton AV is fully up-to-date.

Also read about backing up wpa files, horse, bolted, etc ;-)

What's my next best step then, suppose a format & reload?

I'm a fan of XP, and I think these groups are great for helping each
other out.

But with instructions like that to fix a software activation issue,
it's no wonder that many people scorn Microsoft...

Yeah, I know! No offence to the guys trying to help me out, but the way it's
looking I'm tempted to backup my important stuff and format & reload ;-)

Just doing an online virus scan tho first (nav is up-to-date, but you never
know), as a mate said he had the same problem and it was a virus and/or
spyware, only he can't remember what the virus was!

When I get it sorted, I'll back up the files mentioned and bury them in the
garden, or install linux.
