XP PPTP VPN Testing

B

Bob

Is there a way to test an XP PPTP VPN server by using another machine
on the LAN as the client?

If so, how would you set it up? The idea would be to go out the
gateway and come back in to establish the connection over the
Internet.

Is there any reference material on how to do this?

I don't think so, as you can't use a VPN connection wherein the IP subnet is
the same on both computers/networks. Can you perhaps try a dialup
connection? Disconnect from the LAN and dial up to an ISP on the Internet
and then try to connect via VPN?

Not by using the public IP of the gateway, but you can connect over the private LAN using a PPTP VPN
link just fine. I do that all the time from my iPAQ 5555 PocketPC for testing, particularly the new
SP2 firewall. The VPN server simply assigns an IP to my PocketPC. Look at the first part of the
following page for how I setup one of my XP Pro box's as a VPN server and the addressing scheme for
the clients...

My normal private LAN uses addresses in the 192.168.11.X range.

Otherwise you need to be at a remote location or use a dialup connection from a laptop.
