XP polling

I am using a multislot digital media card reader on a pc
with XP Pro O/S.
XP continually polls the all slots even when a card is
inserted and being read.
This adversely affects the bandwidth of the machine.
Is there a way to stop XP polling or to increase the
interval between polling?

If you don't use all of the slots, you may be able to disable the unused ones in Device Manager.

It's likely your antivirus program is "polling" your
card reader (scanning for viruses). Open your
antivirus program and adjust your scan options
for removal devices.

Thanks for this.
My machine does not have antivirus software running.
Also, I have tried running under Win2K O/S and this
problem does not occur because W2K stops polling after a
few minutes.
I need to use XP however.
