XP Patch ERRORS

I have no big problems, just an .sys and .dll file that evidently don't match
since I've done the latest Windows Update.

However my poor father had his hands full: My father recently summoned me
for help because he mistakenly trusted an Automtaic Update From Microsoft.
One printer will now only print in Megenta and the other only in blue. We he
tried to re-install the drivers, Internet Explorer vanished from the hard
drive.

My father spent 25 years working for Digital Equipment Corporation as a
software engineer, 7 for Stratus Computer as a Software Engineering Manager,
and currently does consulting for Mercury Computer. He knows what he's doing.

Alas, I can't help him because I run XP. Dell sent him no XP Pro backup
Disc... Microsoft DENIES anything they design has any problems (must be the
reason they have to keep making patches for all those security holes...)

Does anyone know ANYTHING about this?

Dell supplies a Dell "Reinstallation CD" with every
computer they sell. Windows update would not
install an update that would cause the problem you describe.
