XP page margin setting

G

Graham

Hi
I want to tell XP what page margins to default to for all applications
and documents. I am prepared to use command prompts, and want to
replicate the setting to many PC's within a site.
Printers are networked, shared and some local.
I want to specify a single default of 5 mm for all borders and all
documents, and all applications.
I have looked in gpedit.msc, and various web pages.

Hi Graham

There are several issues you'll need to consider in this.

First, many inkjet printers won't print within 5mm of the edge of the page,
especially the bottom of the page. For more info about that, see
The bottom of my pages don't print
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/BottomsDontPrint.htm

So I suggest you test out your settings on all possible printers.

Second, every application - even every application within Microsoft Office -
sets its default margins in a completely different way. You'll have to set
up each application separately. Printer settings have no effect on this in
most applications.

In Word, the way to do this is to create a template and make that template
available to all your users. When a user wants to create a new document,
they do File > New and select your template. More info at:
Creating a Template - The Basics (Part I)
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CreateATemplatePart1.htm

and

Distributing macros to other users
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/MacrosVBA/DistributeMacros.htm

This last article is about distributing macros, but since macros are often
stored in templates, the principles apply whether or not your templates
contain macros.

You'll need to inquire in newsgroups devoted to the other applications
you're using in order to find out how to set up default margins there.

Hope this helps.
