Using XP sp1 and trying to install a new samsung cdrw. The cdrw can play the
audio cd ok but when I try to install the software that comes with the
Writer, it just would not "install". When I insert the this software cd, the
light will keeps on blinking, and nothing new display on the screen. Normally
you expect things like installation prog starting etc, but not in this case.

After a while I get this error message dialogue
"NT On Access Scanner service"
NT On-Access Scanner encounterd a problem..........
and details as follows:-
c:\Documen..........\mcshield.exe.mdmp
c:\Docum.............\appcompat.txt

details of system: P3, 551 MHz, 248 MB RAM (actually 1 stick - 256). I
change to a higher Watts power supply but the situation remains

Anyone have any idea whats wrong with it, your advice is much appreciated,
thanks

It sounds like your antivirus program is interfering with the software
installation. Disable the antivirus program and then install the software.
Once the software is installed, enable the antivirus program again.

Disable my Mcafee, and insert the cd, the light keeps blinking, situation
remains the same.

does this link below give you any clue to the error message,
http://search.microsoft.com/search/results.aspx?st=b&na=88&View=en-us&qu=NT+On-Access+Scanner+

I downloaded kb824146 into a folder named 824146 on the desktop and install
this patch but situation remains the same.

Quote from kb824146 ...quotw

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type cmd and then click OK.
3. At the command prompt, type cd %programfiles%\kb824146scan, and then
press ENTER.
4. Type kb824146scan switches.
For information about the available switches to use with the
KB824146scan.exe tool, type KB824146scan.exe /?. The following information is
shown: .. unquote

after line 2, it gives me c:\documents and setting\x>
in which I type in" cd c:\programfiles\824146\kb824146scan.exe and hit enter
and give me this message "the system cannot find the path specified"
what should I type here?

fyi, when I insert the cd into another pc which has the same brand samsung
cd writer, it can read the cd, so there is nothing wrong with the cd.

reckon something to do with the operating system but dont know what it is. TIA

No. The NT On-Access scanner" is a part of the McAfee software program.
Further reflected by the file name in the error message: mcshield.exe

If the software will still not install via autorun, use Windows Explorer to
locate the file on the CD that initiates setup and double click on it.
Usually this will be setup.exe

NOTE: If there is a readme file on the CD, check it out. It may have
explicit (and different) directions for running the install manually.

make it auto run? thanks

If you have *some* CDs that autorun, then nothing is broken.

I guess I should clarify: Older autorun routines (usually for installing
the older software titles) do not always work under XP.
