xp on multiple home computers

I have a relic computer with xp pro, probably pirated, and I want to purchase a clean version of xp pro to install on a new system I have recently received. I want to run both systems. Question: Do I have to purchase 2 separate xp pro packages to run xp legally (getting updates/ servic packs) or can I load just one purchased package on both systems? Thanks for your input.

A purchased copy is licensed to be installed only on a single machine
(if a retail rather than OEM one it may be transferred). So to be fully
in compliance you need to buy two.

If you have a retail box version of WindowsXP Pro, you can get a 2nd license
for your 2nd computer for about $60.

There is a website at www.microsoft.com (related to 2nd licenses for
WindowsXP) where you can enter the key code of the CD you already have to
see if it qualifies for a 2nd license. OEM and unboxed versions of the CD
do not qualify.

I don't know why this is such a touchy subject. Microsoft made 2nd
licenses available in the first place for the retail box versions.

Please post this link, Josh. You have me curious now. :)

Yesterday it worked.
Today it is not working.

For XP Home, go to
http://www.microsoft.com/products/i...=22&pcid=a9d2c448-eb05-4a2b-a062-9c711c533e0c.
You'll see the link on the right under "Here's the easiest way to get
and additional license."

Same is available for XP Pro by going to
http://www.microsoft.com/products/i...ovr&pcid=2abf99cd-a5e4-469c-802e-55ca8ec542d5.

The rule is quite clear. It's one copy (or one license) for each
computer.

There's nothing new here. This is exactly the same rule that's
been in effect on every version of Windows starting with Windows
3.1. The only thing new with XP is that there's now an
enforcement mechanism.

Greetings --

You need to purchase a separate license for each computer on which
you plan to install it, if you wish to be legitimate.

As it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating systems,
it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and U.S.
copyright law http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/117.html), if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which
it is installed. (Consult an attorney versed in copyright law to
determine final applicability in your locale.) The only way in which
WinXP licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows is
that Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft
mechanism, Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more
difficult) multiple installations using a single license.

You can buy additional licenses, assuming you have a retail
license. Naturally, Microsoft cannot sell additional OEM licenses.
Be aware, however, that you'll probably pay more this way than you
would if you were to buy a second copy of WinXP from a discount
retailer; Microsoft will only offer you a 15% discount off their MSRP.
