Xp, Norton, Avast & Mozilla

Hi,

My Norton Antivirus is coming up for renewal and a friend suggested I look
at Avast Antivirus as he uses it and thinks it better, and of course its
free for home use. I've also never been too happy with Norton as my system
(Dell 3Ghz 8300 with 512MB Ram) always seems a little sluggish following a
scan.

I went to look at his system and notices that he also uses Mozilla Firefox
as a browser and Thunderbird for email & news group access.

So my question is, are there any views here firstly on Avast Antivirus and
secondly, can anyone recommend Mozilla. I have tried the Browser and it
seems very good but haven't tried Thunderbird yet. I currently use Outlook
2003 but its a bit to over the top for just emails and I use OE for ng's. It
would be nice to use just the one application.

Thanks for any views.

Paul.

Hello,

I'd currently recommend McAfee Security Suites way over Norton if you were
considering a change.
I have always found Norton software to eat up CPU, slow boot-up times and
take a while to show a dialog!

I'd be interested in a similar piece of software where I can view newsgroups
and emails in an all in one program. Was hoping they'd achieve this with
Outlook 2003, but sadly Microsoft didnt provide it.

I do not know avast but I encourage you to leave Norton for its impact
on performance ... marketing policy. Another possibility is AVG.

With regard to Browser and Mail program, why don't you try Netscape 7.2
which integrates both and is based on Mozilla's engine ?

Hi Paul,

Not so much on the ng's side, but anti-virus wise, I've used Panda Titanium
for a while now, and it's far better than Norton OR McAfee -
www.pandasoftware.com to have a look. I've found a scan doesn't slow my
system down, and it's one of those programs where you install it and forget
about it, unless you feel you need to adjust anything, which I've not found I
needed to.

Am also using Outlook 2003 and found it a little OTT for just emails.

He'd be better off downloading the Mozilla "Suite" if he wants an
all-in-one package. Netscrape inserts AOHell advertisements all over the
place.

Thanks lee. I'll take a look at Panda.

the following
If using Outlook Express, make sure email scanning is disabled.
Especially if it's Mcfee.

I didn't want to use OE for emails as I've never heard a good word about it.
I only use it for ng access.

Thanks.

Paul.

You say that as though the Mozilla 'suite' has some flaws.

I was only asking if anyone had any experience of these packages as they
sounded good on the box.

I will avoid Netscape though.

Thanks

Paul.

Until Microsoft produce something, I'll try Mozilla for mail & ng's and
report back.

Do you know that for a fact? I am using Netscape 7.2 and have not seen
any AOL ads, past the registration screen. And it takes an expert to see
the difference between 7.2 and Mozilla. Personally, I favor Netscape,
out of tradition, but either way, you are better off than with IE and
Outlook.

Um, sorry if that came out that way. The Mozilla Suite is a very good
browser/email/newsreader client. Not good if you like bianary newsgroups
though(strictly text myself). I guess I typed it that way, because I
rarely use Mozilla. Started using Opera nearly four years ago, and I'm too
used to it to switch to anything else, but Mozilla is an excellent choice
too. As for Netscrape and the AOHell ads, I admit I haven't downloaded a
copy of it in ages (for that reason), but I still read on online forums
that it still puts AOL links and ads on the desktop, in the programs list,
and in bookmarks.

Mozilla is the complete suite. It has the equivalent of Firefox
(the browser) and Thunderbird (the e-mail and news client)
integrated into it, along with an HTML editor. I've been using
Mozilla for a couple of years now for all my browsing and e-mail
and Usenet newsgrups. It works very well, and is safe, unlike
Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, which are not safe.

Neither Thunderbird, nor the e-mail client in Mozilla, can be used
to completely replace Outlook. However, they will fulfill the
functions of Outlook Express, which is what they were designed to
do, and do it much more safely.

The latest Netscape is just the Mozilla suite with some commercial
plugins added. Mozilla has all the commercial stuff stripped out
of it. Up to you which you prefer.

Here is the link to download the latest Mozilla, version 1.7.3:

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.7.3/

You will want to download the link that reads:

mozilla-win32-1.7.3-installer.exe

That's the full Mozilla client for Windows PCs.
