XP Networking problem

vlad

I am trying to network a XPPro machine and a XPHome
machine with a crossover cable (this worked XPhome-ME) I
have defined two IP addresses, a subnet mask, the
workgroup is the same, the logon name and password for
both is the same, no firewalls, ping works, ping
127.0.0.1 works BUT they only sometimes see each other,
and once the Pro machine printed off the Home's printer,
but when I try to see the contents of shared drives the
searching computer takes ages and then is told access is
denied and recommends I speak to the network
administrator (me). I have a friend who has the same
problem- he plays network games against his kids over the
internet because the xp computers can't see each other,
but they can all see the router/modem. Is this amother of
Bill's jokes that offers a lot but delivers nothing?
(like internet connection sharing) Put me out of my
misery, somebody please.

I've written a web site that should help you solve the problem:

Windows XP Network Troubleshooting
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot

Please pay particular attention to these sections:

1. Firewalls: Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection
Firewall on local area network connections -- it's for use only on a
direct modem connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all
other firewalls while troubleshooting.

2. Protocols: Use only one for File and Printer Sharing. If the
network needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing
from all but one of them.

3. NetBIOS over TCP/IP: Make sure that it's enabled on all computers.
