Is there a similar way to restore the MBR for xp media edition that is
like win9x's fdisk/mbr ? I had to reinstall my whole system to clear the
mbr.

You should have asked here first, before reinstalling your system!
Here are two easy ways:
- Boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk, then run fdisk /mbr.
And yes, contrary to what many people think, it works for disks
with NTFS partitions.
- Boot the machine with your WinXP CD, get into the Recovery
Console, then run the command fixmbr and perhaps also fixboot.

I booted with win98 and tried fdisk/mbr it didn't work. Are these two
different option you say I can do or do they both need to be done?

fdisk /mbr and fixmbr will do the same thing: They will create a
master boot record suitable for Windows.

Instead of talking about various cures for your problem, it might
be a good idea for you to supply some details:
- What exactly is the problem?
- What do you see on the screen when booting up?
- What is the recent history of the machin?
- What have you done so far to fix the problem?

Does your computer have a hidden retore partition that you access by
pressing a key on boot up? Some computers that do this have a custom MBR so
this works. If your's is one of these computers then you have to get a
utility from the manufacturer to restore the custom MBR. This is most often
seen on IBM laptops but some other manufacturers may do this as well.
