XP 'loses' modem and COM3

R

I've just installed Windows XP Home over Windows ME and, to my surprise,
found that I have 'lost sight' of my modem (internal 56K) and lost a whole
COM port (COM3 - which the modem used in ME). The modem is most definitely
still there and shows up in Device Manager as working properly and without
problems - but none of my dial-up settings can use it to connect to The
Internet.

I've tried setting up new services, I've created modem settings on both COM1
and COM2 (the only ports available now) but nothing seems to work. Has
anyone else encountered this problems and/or can suggest a fix for it? I've
tried MS Support but gave up after being left on hold for 40 mins!

The odd thing was that XP was using the modem to download updates during
install. It was only when the install was complete that the modem
'disappeared'.

Thanks for listening.

I had a similar problem, it happened when I used Windows
Update to download new modem drivers and security
patches. I had to do a system restore, uninstall the
modem completely and reinstall with the original drivers.
Then I was back in business. Good luck.

It occurs to me that during the installation the ME operating system was
controlling the Modem.
Thus it is that you now need to get XP-drivers for the Modem, ME-drivers
will not work !
When you get the XP drivers you may well need to uninstall the ME-drivers
first.

Patrick,

Thanks for the help, much appreciated. My problem is I'm not really sure
what make of modem I have so I don't know where to look for up to date
drivers. It was installed by a dealer as part of a major upgrade of my PC
some time ago and I've lost touch with him.

Any ideas of how I can go about getting XP drivers for the modem?

Thanks again.

Thiere are three (free) programs that I know of that give info regarding
what your machine is made of, recommended in order of below.

'Aida32', free, this prog will even give links to manufacturers drivers
(select Personal edition)
http://www.aida32.hu/aida-download.php?bit=32

Belarc Adviser (free), web-based (updates itself, but respectable)
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

'SiSoft Sandra', free, don't like meself, it leaves out items (modem) unless
you pay;
http://tinyurl.com/jxwl

original link for above seems to 'break' but here it is anyway;
http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/index.html?dir=dload&location=sware_dl_x86&langx=en&a=
(should include '=' on end)

Patrick,

Thanks again. I'll check out those utilities.
