XP Logon: Pwd Cursor problem

J

J.W. Sargent

Good morning,

Fairly frequently when users log off and the system reverts back to the
XP default Logon Screen the next user to log in is faced with no
blinking cursor in the password window hence is unable to enter the pwd.
To get around this the system must be re-started. Any thoughts on how to
correct this would be most appreciated, OS is Win-XP Home w/SP 3.

With just about any odd problem now days, the first thing to do is scan for
malware with an up to date antivirus program and a program like:
Anti-Malware 1.34, which is a great, free program, that can be downloaded
from here:

Thanks for the suggestion Ron, I tried it, found 4 Adaware data miners
(why Trend Micro overlooked these is interesting); removed them and it
did the same thing. Any other suggestions will be appreciated...

You can use the Tab key to navigate to the box. I have also heard of that
happening with the Logitech SetPoint mouse. Try another mouse or mouse
driver.

Just a couple of suggestions:

- for a workaround, to get logged on, hold down Control and Alt together
then tap the Delete key twice. In the logon screen that then comes up change
name if necessary and enter password.

- for an attempt at a fix, try the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service from
MS at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en.
Many folk have had this problem, as Google would reveal, and UPHClean has
worked in many (but not all) cases - so it's worth a try.

I've had this problem and pressing Tab as "someone else" suggested never
worked for me. While it might get you to the right account entry on the
logon screen, it won't help get the cursor into the password field.

I think that virus scanning tools (malware, trojans, miners, bots,
etc.) are only going to find things that they know about from their
latest database updates. I don't think any one tool will know about
every threat in the world so some tools are bound to miss things
others will find. They can only find what they are programmed to
find.

I have taken a liking to the free tools that are talked about here and
I dumped the McAfee offered by my Internet provider. It never found a
darn thing, takes too long to run and I can't control it the way I
want. In a word, I just hate it. I gave up on Norton a long time
ago.

The tools talked about here - Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware, etc. seem to
work well for me. I used to think Spybot was pretty good, but
nowadays it usually comes up clean where the others almost always turn
up stuff I don't like especially after a week or two of surfing.

Good Morning,

I tried the UPHClean suggested and no luck, same issue...

Any other suggestions will be most welcomed.
