XP licensing scenario

Dale J Bjorklund

Hello, I'm new.
I'm getting a new PC to replace one of <gasp> three we
already have, and have a question about once I'm ready to
work the new one into our home network, in regard to XP
license management. In this scenario, the new machine (P4)
will be mine, my current (P4 also) will be utilized by my
son.

My current PC is running XP Pro(upgraded from home ~2 mos.
ago)
-Need to revert to Home seat for son's use

New machine will come with XP Home
-I want it to run my seat of Pro

How do I proceed? Do the license changes first, or leave
until I'm done preping the new machine for integration, or
doesn't it matter. Does this scenario imply any special
license activation issues. Once uninstalled from my son's
current machine, I should have a marketable seat of
upgrade Home, correct?

Preinstalled OEM versions of Windows XP are explicitly "tied"
to the original computer it was installed on. One cannot use that
version of XP on any other computer. Only "retail versions" of XP
may be transferred to a different computer.

Carey,

Dale said he upgraded his old P4 to XP Pro. This means that he has a retail
XP Pro Upgrade.

Dale,

For your sone, you will have to re-formaat the P4 and re-install everything
with XP Home. Then, on the new P4 PC, do the Home to Pro. Then you may
have to phone Microsoft for the activations of both systems.

Y.
