XP: Java Virtual Machine?

A

Admiral Stockdale

Hi there- I have xp pro installed and am having problems with java. When I
try to enter chat rooms I get a message saying I need java virtual machine
and a link to apparently download. However, the link sends me to a msft
site that says that I do indeed need vm, but it doesn't let me download it
nor tell me what to do. Any ideas? This happens even though I have
reformatted.

Greetings --

As the result of a lawsuit by Sun Microsystems, and the ensuing
settlement, Microsoft is no longer allowed to provide its own Java
Virtual Machine to Windows users. You can get almost the same
functionality by downloading Sun's version of Java from
http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html. If you want the broader
capabilities of Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine, it is still
available from a lot of 3rd-party web sites, some of which are listed
here: http://www.java-virtual-machine.net/download.html.

If you do choose the Microsoft JVM, be sure to visit Windows
Update to apply a needed security patch.

I noticed this same scenario for the first time today, since I formatted. I bought a Dell and GEEZ I had major bugs from all the crap they installed. I formatted and reinstalled everything (that "I" wanted) and decided to visit my favourite chat site today and noticed no chat would load. Then I realized I didn't have Java installed on my system. Then I remembered the lawsuit and went to Sun's site and downloaded their Java 2 Platform and it works actually better, in my opinion, than Microsoft's. But then again, that's just my opinion.

For legal reasons, Microsoft no longer provides the Java Virtual Machine;
however, Sun does. Get it here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp .

If you have a complaint, it wasn't MS who left its customers High & Dry, it
was the US Justice system who issued the cease to support MS Java. So
you'll have to bring your issues up to the US Justice department and not
MS - they are only complying with the court issued/directed decision.

In addition, if you find a copy of MSVM, (easy enough on Google) MS Updates
indeed have a free update. It is still "supported", just not available on
the service packs.

It will only continue to be supported for a short time.
You should be planning your migration away from it.
See the links I provided on my other reply.

Thanks for all the replies. Right after I sent this message I ran across a
message from some random programming group about this problem. Installed
and everything seems to work fine, thanks.
