XP Installing Standard Display Drivers

I am having trouble with my display drivers. First in device mangaer the
adapter is not displayed. Second I am trying to get my ATI Radeon 9250 AGP
256MB card back up and running. A little bit of background on my problem: I
had installed Microsoft's spyware zapper and when I ran it I had several
problems. I have fixed them all except for my video problem. When I try to
reinstall my ATI drivers I get an error message that says install standard
vga drivers then install the ATI drivers. I have been everywhere on
microsoft's website to figure out this problem. I have gone as far as to
delete everything pertaining to anything about display drivers and programs
with no luck. Any solutions?

It's looking for the drivers on your installation disk. Do an sfc /scannow
to repair the installation and Windows will look for them, no doubt asking
you to insert the CD. Your current settings/setup will be saved.

P.S. I meant to say do a Start/Run and enter sfc /scannow (with the space)
and press OK.
I ditched the MS Anti Spyware - it caused major problems here too.

Spyware zappers are not created to fix display driver issues.

What they are asking you to do is: Start/Run/Msconfig/Boot.ini - Check off
BaseVideo, reboot then install your drivers.

Actually it is not usually necessary - just run the downloaded file from
ATI. But you can Start - Run - MSConfig.exe and on the Boot.ini page,
check /BASEVIDEO

Exit and reboot and run the install. Run MSConfig again before
rebooting to uncheck. Exit and at reboot there will be a message
about 'System Configuration'. Check the 'Do not show again' box and
exit

Some thoughts:
We have had to install the latest DirectX for many ATI driver
installations to take. We've had particualr trouble with the Radeon 9000
series.

Is there also an onbaord display adaptor? If so make sure it is disabled
in BIOS and if it shows in Device Manager disable it there, too.

Download the latest Radeon drivers for XP from ATI. Save to desktop.
Windows Explorer C:\ATI\Support\wxp-2kxxxxwhatever\run the uninstall
utility. reboot cancel any attempt to load drivers. double click on the
driver file on the desktop.
