XP installation question with partitioned disks

Hi i have a system with a disk that has been partition into a C:\ (system
volume) and D:\( volume name is SATA_STORE - just a part for storage). i have
important data i save on D and cant blow it away. I have to re install
windows but when i go through the installation in notice windows is auto
making the D:\(SATA_STORE) by default the C:\ - I am not selecting this as
the installation directory instead going with the other partition which i
delete and recreate as NTFS and installation goes fine, however when windows
loads up i notice that the installation has happened on a D:\(which is the
new NTFS parition i created during installation) and SATA_PRIME is showing up
as my C:\ - i am not able to change the parition names in disk manager and i
even tried the registry change that you can do to rename the partition drive
that just totally screwed me could not load into windows.

i only have about 18GB of critical data on D and i know i can just copy that
some where - blow the whole thing away and just re build and copy back but I
dont have a spare disk and kind of curious how to go about this as well

any and all help / advise is appreciated

regards

Purchase a new hd & install xp to it,once xp is up & running, plug in old hd,
retrieve files in xp..New hds can be had for 50.00 or so,+ use old for
storage

No matter what else, get yourself a DVD burner and burn that data off for
safe keeping. A hard disk so long as it's being actively used is not good
enough to rely on just that copy.
