XP installation freezes just before completion

Windows XP Professional

Reinstallation using Gateway's red and blue (drivers and OS) CDs.

The red CD also contains hardware tests. All passed before reinstallation
was attempted.

HD was wiped clean before commencing.

XP installation goes well (39 minutes remaining) until about 1-minutes
remain. At that point, the system refreezes.

Forced reboot results in restart of Windows Setup (39 minutes remaining) and
then proceeeds to repeatable freeze.

Any ideas?

I do have other non-OEM Windows XP CDs on hand, but I can't figure out how
to reformat the drive to start over.

Googling around for the 39-minute error indicates either a problem with the
catalogues if upgrading or possibly a bad optical drive. Since you aren't
upgrading, I think I'd try a different optical drive.

Thanks, Malke.

Actually, with 39 minutes to go, all is well!

The freeze occurs when there's only one or two minutes left.

I'm sorry, I thought you referred to the 39-minute thing. Most failures to
install an operating system do come about because of faulty hardware. Strip
the machine down to the basics. Since you are using a Gateway restore disk,
make sure you have the same hardware installed to match the factory image.
It won't hurt for you to do some hardware testing, at least the hard drive
and the RAM, and it won't hurt to swap out that optical drive either.
