XP input hangs on first keypress!

Hi,
OS: XP professional with SP2
Problem: The system boots to the log in screen, but as soon as a key is
pressed (eg to enter the password) all input stops, this includes the mouse
which was working up until this point. The only recent changes i've done to
the system are some performance registry settings, and the installation of a
vpn client. Could these have mullered my system? I was using Logitech
cordless mouse/keyboard, but have reverted to the old corded ones to no avail.
If this is a drier issue Is there any way i can get the system to use the
old bog-standard drivers via the xp install disk ( It boots and offers the
repair console)

Thanks in advance for any help

Hi,

How about in Safe mode, does it do the same thing there?

Thanks
but yes, the same thing happens, (and when I tried restoring last good
setup).
I have to admint this is a strange one!
I'm beginning to think that I'll need to reinstall, unless the XP disk
repair will work
but i've not had to use it before

Hi Greg,

It almost sounds like a hardware issue, but it won't hurt to try a repair
installation first.
