XP host for internet sharing with network win 98

Hi,

I have a two system network, on is XP home and the other
is Win 98. There is a net gear 100bms switch and netgear
100mbs NIC card in the Win 98 system. The XP system has
a built in 100bms NIC. network works fine for file and
printer sharing, but fails for internet share.

The xp system is the internet host and connects to the
internet through dial up. That works fine also, but
sharing from the Win 98 fails. The Win 98 side says it
can not see the network or server. The netsetup disk
made by setting up xp for internet sharing fails after a
restart saying it can not find the NIC card.

Can 98 (not second edition or ME) work with xp for this?
What have I missed?

Thanks,

Max Chandler

All versions of Windows can share XP's Internet connection.

The Network Setup Wizard sometimes fails to detect a NIC, probably due
to a minor bug in the NIC's driver program. Fortunately, there's no
need to run the Wizard to configure Win 98 as an ICS client. In
Control Panel | Network, click "TCP/IP->NIC" and make sure that it's
configured to obtain an IP address automatically.

If there are still problems, these steps should help you find them:

1. On the XP computer, right click the local area network connection
and click Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: none
DNS Server = none

2. On the 98 computer, go to Start | Run | Winipcfg and select the NIC
from the menu. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1

3. If #1 and #2 are right, open a command prompt window on 98 and
enter these lines. Each one should get four replies:

ping 192.168.0.1
ping 216.239.39.99
ping google.com

4. If #1-#3 are right, enter these addresses in Internet Explorer on
98. They should both take you to the Google web page:

http://216.239.39.99
http://google.com

Hi,

Thanks. This was a really good answer. Here's what
happened.

#1 - check XP settings. matched.

#2 - check 98 settings.- matched except DNS. Used
Network icon in contorl panel to set DNS to 192.168.0.1

#3 ping tests on XP and 98 4 replies no lost, on both
computers all ip's & google.com

#4 IE on 98
open with home page at www.yahoo.com fails This
Page cannot be displayed Cannot find server.

http://216.239.39.99 fails This page cannot be
displayed
res://C:\Windows\System\SHDOCLC.dll\dnserror.htm

httP;//google.com fails exactly like 216.239.
216.239.39.99 above.

To get here I have to enable DNS and set it to 192...
with hose set to newtork name of host system. If don't
do this then ping fails olso.

Thanks,

Max Chandler

Thnaks,

You're welcome, Max. Thanks for doing those tests and posting the
results.

In Internet Explorer, click Tools | Internet Options | Connections |
LAN Settings and clear all of the boxes in that window.

If that doesn't solve the problem, I recommend posting a message in
the Internet Explorer news group with the details that you've given
here.
