XP Home Repair Hangs

J

Jacob Bednard

First off, thanks to anyone that will help...

Latly I've been expirencing some adware problems. I found the source of it
an got rid of it. Since then, there have been no signs of it, but the
computer has run noticbly slower.

Last night I opened IE 6 check my email. I usealy do not use IE but windows
live messenger has a button that takes you directly to your hotmail inbox.

When IE opened, I was attacked with the adware again. So this time I went
right to an XP Repair.

I popped in my Home SP2 disk went to repair an installation (You first hit
enter then F8 then R, or somthing like this). It went through what seemed
well, but when it is in the installing devices section, it hangs about 3/4s
way though. just under the s. Before it gets to the s, it ask me to install a
capture card I do not own anymore. I've hit yes and no at the prompt with no
luck down the line. I did run a chkdsk for the heck of it with no results.

Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this...

Thanks,
Jake

If you can restart the old install, use Device Manager to disable the entry
for the capture card before running the Repair setup.
If not, there are two possibilities I know of. If you are familiar with
editing the registry, you might remove the device from the device list in
Recovery Console. (Not really that easy) You mght also try pulling out the
old card, if still in the machine.

How to edit the registry offline using BartPE boot CD:
