XP Home PCs connecting to password protected 98SE shares

Mal Franks

I have a network of 5 PCs, 3 Windows XP Home PCs and 2 Windows 98SE PCs
and use TCP/IP protocol for file sharing.

Until last week all of my XP Home PCs were able to connect to password
protected shares on my 98SE PCs, but now the passwords are no longer
being accepted when trying to log in to them, however both 98SE PCs can
still log in to the password protected shares on each other

Upon disabling password protection the XP Home PCs can access them.

Any suggestions why this is happening now?

Mal,

What changes did you make last week?

Networking between Windows NT/2K/XP, and Windows 98 is not as straightforward as
simply between Windows NT/2K/XP. You might find this reference to be helpful:

I happened to me after I installed some of the latest security updates
to winxp home. It appears that winxp now appends Guest to the "connect
to" screen. It now says the user account is "machine/Guest" where
machine is the machine name. I have created a user account named
"guest" on the win98se machine and logged on under it but it does no
good. The only way to access the drives is to remove the passwords.
Welcome to another great SECURITY UPDATE from the folks at MS.

On XP Home, go to Control Panel | User Accounts, click your account,
click "Manage my network passwords", and remove any stored passwords
for the 98SE shares. Then try accessing the shares again.

Went to "manage my network passwords" and confirmed that no passwords
are stored there period. Still cannot get access to shared win98se hard
drive without removing the passwords for the shared drive on that machine???

Only ran Windows Update

Thanks, I'll check out that link

Mal

Mal,

Did Windows Update maybe apply SP2? That's the easiest to diagnose, since SP2
enables the Windows Firewall by default, so you need to enable the WF File and
Printer Sharing exception.

If that wasn't it, and if the document doesn't help, let us know please.

Ever get a resolution to the "machine/Guest" problem? I'm trying to figure
out how to make the "machine name" part go away. I was able to get a clients
XP Home laptop to attach to W2K Server no problem. I can login as myself or
as the administrator (or any other user I create in Active Directory) and
attach (machine name doesn't appear in login screen). I try the actual users
(AD) login name and password hit ok, login screen refreshes with
"computername/username" and won't connect.
