I just loaded XP Home Edition on a older Pentium 4 PC, office 3003, and
Symantec Corporate Edition A/V on the PC. After performing the automatic
updates (79 of them) .....
Allowing so many updates to install automatically is basically asking
for trouble; a lot can go wrong with that many changes to systems files.
I've always found it best to install no more than 8 to 10 updates at a
time, rebooting between each batch. Sure, it takes longer, but there
are less likely to be problems, and you're more likely to know which
update did cause a problem, should one occur.
.....and restarting the PC, I get a "Scan out of the range"
error and it won't do anything else. I have not seen or dealt with this
fault before. Any ideas? I roll back to the last known recovery point
before the updates and get the same error as before.
That's your monitor telling you that it's not receiving a usable
signal from the computer. One of those updates must have replaced the
installed video drivers with a generic version that had default settings
incompatible with your monitor.
Boot into VGA Mode or Safe Mode and then set the display
(resolution, refresh rate, and/or number of colors) to something that
your monitor can handle. Consult its manual to determine acceptable
settings. Reboot one more time, into normal mode.
Once recovered, download and install the latest WinXP-specific video
drivers from your video adapter's manufacturer's web site.
