XP home install 'loop' problem

I have recently tried to reinstall XP home using the cd provided by the
computer manufacturer. After using the 'upgrade' option in setup the install
appears to get under way.
After reaching the install screen i get the message:


error: the signature for windows xp home edition upgrade is invalid. the
error code is 426. the service has not been started.

after clicking ok the computer reboots and starts the whole proceedure over
again. I have tried booting from the cd and harddrive but each time the setup
kicks in and the loop continues.

its driving me crazy!

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
